If you want a soundbite summary, Lehman was the architect of the DMCA.

Be careful handling that sarcasm. Not everyone recognizes it as such and it has the tendency to be quite explosive in certain environments. Somewhere out there is a journalism student using the phrase “Mr. Lessig, self-avowed Marxist….”

It may not be that Mr. Lehman misunderstands Professor Lessig, but rather he, and his ilk, have adopted the Karl Rove strategy of: If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

Oh Im sorry, thats not Rove, its Goebbels.

Unfortunately I think it is the latter and there are a lot of Mr. Lehmans in the political world – whether their lack of comprehension is by choice or not.

It must be very frustrating to continue to stress your point on where you stand on copyright law yet continually have it conveyed by others that you wish to abolish it.

My suggestion to Mr. Lehman is that he listen to the speech you gave at the this years Open Source Business Conference entitled the Creator’s Dillemma (available at http://www.itconversations.com). In this speech, I believe you succinctly state your position on copyright. If after listening to your speech he is still unclear of your position, then the problem lies not with your message but with Mr. Lehman’s comprehension.

That’s another reason why people avoid open political discourse. Spinners are there to do it for them and will come after them with their spinning techniques if they step over the line. However, like every weapon, spinning is also a double edged sword.

I don’t believe in machine guns on motion detectors either (are you crazy? Don’t turn that thing on–you might shoot the mailman, or someone on the sidewalk!) but that doesn’t mean I’m for trespassing.
