Creative Commons will be hosting a book party to celebrate Dan Gillmor’s new book, We the Media, which (the good) O’Reilly is publishing, and which will also be available under a Creative Commons license. (They never got around to having a book party for my book. Oh well. They’re busy.) The date is July 30, in the evening. More details soon.

  1. I’m hoping this is a trend in publishing: Lessig’s “Free Culture,” Docotorow’s “Eastern Standard Tribe,” and now Gillmor’s “We the Media” are all being simultaneously published as actuall books and made available online.

Now if only the music industry would get a clue.

  2. It’s certainly a trend. But, honestly, it’s got built-in limits. Not to disrespect their intrinsic merits, but, *functionally*, those books are in a large part marketing brochures for their authors. That doesn’t scale (down, in this case, not up).

  3. the o’reilly download page:

both the Table of Contents and the index (pdf’s) are missing. I hope someone fixes it.

I definitely enjoy your use of (the good) in terms of O’Reilly. I’m going to have to hold my own private party to your book, which will consist of reading it.

Speaking of the Good O’Reilly of the West and the Wicked O’Reilly of
the East, when I was in San Jose April 1 working on Opening E-Voting, I introduced myself to people as
working on a story for O’Reilly Media. People gave me these
looks, until I added, “You know–the respected technical
    publisher.”

So, the party will be in the Bay Area? Oddly enough, I can make that on
my way back from OSCON this year–how excellent!

    Details, details–when and where?
