fabulously cool: iFixit's teardown platform

This is fabulously cool: iFixit has built a teardown platform. I’ve used the site many times to take apart Mac’s I’ve needed to fix. But those instructions were iFixit prepared. They’ve now enabled anyone to build a teardown (“the act or process of disassembling”) spec for any product. The site offers the structure and advice for building great teardowns. It then hosts and supports feedback. It is a fantastic example of a “hybrid,” as REMIX defines the term — and all submissions are CC-BY-NC-SA.

    Unless you were not aware of it: The Pirate Party is now sailing into the European Parliament and EU. We made it! 🙂

    Yeah, iFixit looks cool – I’ve seen them at the maker fair. I don’t know which is better and I’m not affiliated in either site, but might as well mention their competitor: http://www.wikihow.com/Main-Page – and sure enough they use a CC license, too.

    Prof – another great find! And a fabulous point that they have expanded their (fairly) static and (certainly) expensive model by turning to their crowd. How cool!

    Having my experience from the free software movement, I’m critical of Attribution-NonCommercial licenses put out by Creative Commons, since their non-free. The benefit of the free software definition, as opposed to Creative Commons (lack of one), is it avoids the hair splitting possibilities of “commercial advantage or private monetary compensation”. Besides sidestepping possible confusion of “commercial purposes”, the free software idea has the added side effect of granting freedom — to use the work “for any purpose”. Even nuclear warfare.

    just saw a documentary on dutch television about you (larry lesseg), girltalk and the brazil way of copyrights. i agree with your view of things! if you’re interested i’ll post a link when it comes online (must things shown on public television come online) it’s english with dutch subtitles so you can probably understand it. (maybe you’ve even seen it before!).

    by the way, i’m sorry for getting you name wrong. i see now that it is “Lawrence Lessig”. sorry. and i now see the amount of spelling mistakes. Oops.

    Where is Lessig?? Off the grid for two months. Hope nothing happened to him or he is not too depressed over recent political events.

    I figured recent events in the Boston area, elites running into legal trouble, at the hands of common citizens would bring hiim out.

    BOSTON — A Boston University student has been ordered to pay $675,000 to four record labels for illegally downloading and sharing music. Joel Tenenbaum, of Providence, R.I., admitted he downloaded and distributed 30 songs. The only issue for the jury to decide was how much in damages to award the record labels.

    Although I think Lessig is on record as saying the Harvard prof’s attempted legal defense of fair use was stretching it, but Lessig was arguing for jury nullification.

    In Harvard I guess that they did not teach not talking back to the police, or if you are going to steal music (and people did it with cassettes decades ago) don’t do it in public and don’t sell pirated cassettes on the street. Also take things lawyers or politicians say, not as 100% lies, but with skepticism.

    Wasn’t Lessig supposed to move to Cambridge to pontificate on ethics of all things?

    Because of Harvard’s endowment problems, wasn’t Harvard Law School cutting positions?
