MediaCon: Glenn Reynolds into the breach

Glenn has a great column on the “internet will save us” meme. The final paragraph captures it perfectly:

So, Michael, here’s the deal: if you think that concentration in Old Media is okay because New Media will provide the discipline, then stand up for freeing the New Media from the shackles that the Old Media are trying to weld on. Because if you’re not serious about freeing the New Media, then you’re not serious about competition, and what you’re describing isn’t a bold new world, but a sellout.

Exactly right.

Tl2…when you follow the money you’ll see what’s going to happen. Clear Channel’s lobbyist in DC doesn’t have a problem with the company owning 12 stations in a market. That would give them about 50% of all radio dollars in a market. All the big players are salivating and building up war chests to devour more. It’s going to be an interesting feeding.

    Damn right.

You can try to compete all you want with free media but free media will always exist–as long as freedom itself is protected.
