Specifically what is it about some guy being able to paste some out-of-context quotes into a compilation that makes it “wonderful”?
I am just confused about what kind of point it is trying to be made.
It’s not the out of context part that is significant. What is significant is how often Bush said “it’s hard work.” Talk about a broken record. If the job is so hard for him, let someone else do it who has a good work ethic.
There’s a very good reason for why Bush repeated this over and over ad nauseum. Along with being a great subversion of the phrase (admittedly an easy thing to do), the reworked clip is a great proof of how important the phrase is to Bush’s re-election.
As inane as it sounded to many, coming from our chicken hawk, deeply spoiled and protected president, this phrase is *the* message Republicans have been pushing since the 1960s, or some would argue, since even earlier. Republicans know hard work. It’s a party of the people — the hard working people, that is. They don’t look for government assistance. They don’t want their taxes to support social programs. They want less government, because people who work hard don’t need government.
Obviously, by implication, anyone not a Republican is lazy, shiftless, “academic,” etc.
Also obviously, this is a false distinction.
Corporate interests chose sides with the Republicans (a little more effectively than the Democrats have) and specifically rode the classist and bigoted backlash against civil rights, feminism, and poverty reduction to power using everything that’s implied behind the phrase “it’s hard work.”
And who can be against hard work? Hard work is American! It’s what makes us the great nation we are today!
Note that it’s also the phrase that we all best remember. Scary, no? We probably don’t remember word-for-word the eloquent and generally well reasoned points Kerry made. No, our lizard brains remember “it’s hard work; it’s necessary work” and “it’s my solemn duty.”
What kind of video is it? It doesn’t want to play under linux / firefox.
You make good points, susy, but there is an added dimension: His vocal inflection and facial expression. He didn’t come across as a hard worker. His tone of voice made him seem like someone who was forced to work hard, and wasn’t particularly enjoying it. That’s hardly a good takeaway.
